Black Rock is one of the most eclectic communities in all of Connecticut. A part of Fairfield until 1870 when Mayor Barnum (yes, PT Barnum) annexed Black Rock to Bridgeport. Our neighborhood occupies a special niche in the region. There’s nothing like it. And now, our community is experiencing a 2020 revival.
From the new Birdman Juke Joint to staples like Harborview Market, Black Rock offers a diverse mix of shops, restaurants, and one-of-a-kind services. We have neighborhood bars where everybody actually knows your name; a local printer; hair salons for all kinds of hair; and that modern-day necessity — our own craft brewer.
Black Rock’s documented history goes back to the early 17th century. The names of Bartram, Ellsworth, and Brewster still dot the map. Caleb Brewster, a central figure of the Turn series, settled here after his spying days were done. In the 1800s, the George Hotel on the harbor drew summer visitors from New York City. As industry skyrocketed across Bridgeport in the 20th century, Black Rock became more residential.
Today, we thrive as one of Fairfield County’s best-kept secrets. The Ash Creek separates us from Fairfield and leads to the St. Mary’s by the Sea walkway where locals come to fish, stroll along the waterfront, picnic, and maybe kindle a romantic moment. Boats still course the waters, just not the merchant ships of the past.
Virtually every race, ethnicity, and faith can be found in Black Rock, adding to our vibrancy. To claim Black Rock affiliation puts you in a special category.
We all know each other, we all celebrate Black Rock Day every spring and we turn out en masse for our latest favorite event—Porchfest. We’re different, but we’re hospitable. Won’t you spend some time with us?
